Emo music, is it overrated?
by catherinesidorenko at 1am, October 15th, 2009 in GeneralIt seems that today emo music is overrated, because of bands like Hawthorne Heights and Bayside who sing needlessly about cutting and so on. Like my friend Nikc once told me “Screamo is a bunch of [people that dress completely black] with a gay haircut that covers an eye.” Nick is a metalhead so I guess his opinion doesn’t matter.
When I googled “emo quotes” I got the famous Adam and Andrew song, and many obnoxious things, but in the ones that were “trying not to be mean” I got:

I think emo music really has become overrated.
Im not sure if all of the music is overrated i see where your coming from and some of those songs get old. Marilyn Manson is awesome but freaky so what else do you expect. the music is good but i agree its getting old so maybe what we need is new songs. or to expand our musical horizons and look up different emo bands instead of just our favorites.

Hawethorne Heights is NOT an emo band, they’re shitty pop punk with a screamer as worm food. Screamo is rarely a bunch of random dark scene looking dudes who look “gay” (because being gay is a TERRIBLE thing apparently).
You need to really know what emo and screamo is. (Circle Takes The Square, Saetia, City of Caterpillar, Pg.99, Age Sixteen, etc.)

But just listen music that you like, not to be cool, but just be you, its not that difficult unless your a drone or in a clone molding cult. I like different music, from emo, screamo, metal, alternative, indie, and eminem (just eminem for rap though). So just be urself or be a douch.

I was disapointed to hear that you think that emo has become “overrated”. I don’t cut but I have noticed alot of people seem to think that thats all there is to being emo! I HATE IT! I don’t like your friend much, he makes to meny generaliations and thats what’smakeing emo so “overated”. I don’t like how some people are emo because they think it looks cool. I like the look yes, but thats not why I am emo! Some people just take it over the top. And i wouldn’t call people who wear black and cut them selves emo. Cutting isn’t emotional at all, its a very bad outlet. Emo is more or less, EMOtional people who express themselves.

Okay all this “Emos are people who cut themselves” is a stereotype. Emo has nothing to do with blood and being depressed 24/7. That’s what people don’t understand, and it’s pretty offensive when people say “you’re emo if you cut”. That’s not necessarily true cause anyone can cut! It’s an act of DEPRESSION!

Emo was originally a style and yes i think that the music industries have taken it much to far.
EMO originally came out as the more “Emotional” or “Depressed” people. But then people started to take it much to far.
I will admit that at one point in time i did cut my hips, but thats because i WAS suicidle. Dont take a style to far. It hurts the feelings of the people that actually understand it.

I’m emo and I dont give a fck what people have to say. And being emo doesnt have to mean you cut yourself. It can mean a number of things. I find judging by sterotype isnt the way to go. (Myself being goth) My friends accept me cause the took the time to get to know me. Looks dont matter so who gives a damn? My outfit normally consists of torn jeans, band logo shirt, black jacket with paint stains, and op shoes. Some say “Hey, that looks awesome.” or others say “Goth chick hah! Oooh want a razor and go to the next level?” and I ignore the comments like that one. Judging isnt the way to go unless you know that person. And btw, emo music is not over rated. So dont be hatin’ on it.
