Subcultures
by catherinesidorenko at 8pm, January 16th, 2008 in General, Music & BandsWhich bands are emo?
A lot fo different people claim many different bands are emo. To me it ums up to about this:
Mainstream Emo: listened by 12 and 13 year olds, adults who dont know what emo is, and girls that also listen to Fergie and Nelly Furtado.
eg: Fall Out Boy, Cute Is What We Aim For, P!ATD, Paramore, etc.
Screamo: Heavier tunes listened my metalheads or emos that just like metal.
eg: FFTL, Chiodos, Alesana, Escape The Fate, etc.
Punk Emo: listened to by random kids of any ages
eg: Simple Plan, Angels and Airwaves, New Found Glory, etc.
Acoustic Emo: Listened by often very not emo people who are interested in Folk and softer tunes, or anybody else who wants to make a change
eg: Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie, Secondhand Serenade, etc.
Rock Emo: Has more of a rock feel with emo lyrics. Can go from mainstream to underground.
eg: Billy Talent, Count The Stars, Funeral For A Friend, Taking Back Sunday
Ready-To-Sell-Emo: There are some bands that belong in the other catigories that belong here also. This is mostly to recondnize bands that are mostly known for their good looks then actual musical talent (I’m already hearing the complains of people).
eg: Three Days Grace, Hawthorne Heights (though I find them ugly), Boys Like Girls, Caretl, etc.
You might agree or disagree with me, but just to prove that there are many subcultures in a subculture. So to all you people who go around calling someone a poser, well they do listen to emo music. Its just different form what you listen to.

the last part is sooo true

I totally agree with everything you said except the thing with Three days grace. I used to like them a lot and i think they make great music. they don’t have good lyrics but whatever. I don’t think they’re emo but i think they sold out a little. i don’t think they’re that good looking either! whatever I love this post its awesome!!!

Added April 5th, 2008 at 6:37 pmThis is the worst display of genre cutting I have ever seen
1. You clearly do not understand what emo is at all. Where is your generation divisions? First, second and third wave emo. Third wave is where were at now with the pop punk (anything on Fueled By Ramen) and the post hardcore (anything from Saosin to Chiodos), which is what those genres should be called since they have nothing to do with the Sunny Day Real Estates of the 1st Wave.
2. Screamo. please for the love of god dont use this word ever again. You sound like my mom who thinks anything with gutteral or intense vocals counts as screamo. There has never been a commercially viable screamo band so if you need some examples: Antioch Arrow, Page 99
seriously man dont propagate the screamo myth, the term skramz has been thrown around a lot lately to make up for you kids trying to use screamo to mean emo, dont make em rename their genre cuz you fucked their shit up.
Metalheads hate screamo as it is a pure form of punk closely related to crust.
3. Billy Talent and Three Days Grace are rock. There is no emo there at all, they are rock.
Generic boring rock midly influenced by raprock/numetal
4. Okay heres the important part: What you see on tv or in magazines sold at Hot Topic or Hollister has been specifically created so that you mall rats will spend you parents cash. It has been this way since The Sex Pistols were created to sell punk music to the masses. Every single band mentioned in your article fits into this category. If you want to continue listening to what your tv tells you to fine go ahead, just dont pretend you understand the real scene. If you want to understand the scene then you need to search the internet, go to shows and find out more about the bands that struggle every day to pay for food and gas because they refuse to dilute their music like so many of the bands that have changed from metalcore to plain ol boring rock ie. Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Thrice, Bury Your Dead etc.
If you want music that doesnt suck I would highly recommend you start thinking and stop reading this trash of an article
Added April 9th, 2008 at 1:18 amfyrexius - A7F (avenged sevenfol) red jumpsuit apperatus, rise against (not rise against the maschine that is crap), lost prophets, chris daugtry, ignite, hoobastank, snow patrol, porcupinetree, a new found glory, flyleaf, shattersphere, and good charlotte + my chemical romance
k lets dissect this - A7F? its A7X you tard. They play guns & roses style rock nowadays and used to play metalcore. not emo. next!
red jumpsuit - fine ill let this shit slip through since the guy that wrote this article thinks this counts as emo
rise against - hardcore punk
RAGE against the machine, not rise you asswipe - greatest band of the 90s by far, fun for parties, fun for drinking, fun for fighting, inspiring political messages, you have terrible taste in music if you cant see that.
lost prophets - not emo.
daughtry - some country shit.
hoobastank, snow patrol, porcupinetree - indie rock shit.
new found glory - pop punk.
fuck you just suck so much dick i can barely go on
mcr - k i used to like this band a few years ago before that marching band cd, maybe listen to the first 2 albums theyre pretty fucking decent
and xxAllTheLostSoulsxx - if your not edge dont use xs around your name, if your not old enough to drink then your not old enough to choose to be edge, if your reading this blog your not old enough to drink therefore dont use xs around your name
oh and the important part - BFMV is commercialized metalcore, Suicide Silence would murder you if you tried to call them emo
They are DEATHCORE - that means they combine Death Metal with Metalcore (which is Extreme Metal and Hardcore Punk combined already) there is no influence from emo except maybe some lyrics declaring war on mallrat emo kids
seriously ill be happy to answer any questions at elitvak16@hotmail.com
Added April 9th, 2008 at 1:33 amhmmm i mean lik im 12 but i lik billy talent, three days grace, hawthorne heights, paramore, boys lik girls, angels and airwaves, my chemical romance (duh), tokio hotel, secondhand serenade, simple plan, blessthefall (uv probably neva heard of them), and a ton more…… but i dont really consider all of these “emo”
Added October 2nd, 2008 at 11:48 ambut i totally agree wit the last part ^ ^
