The confusion of Emo.

Since the beginning of time, or at least since the start of the 20th century, there has been a hu-bub about the phrase, “emo”.
Many would argue to believe that it is a,
“way of life”
“state of mind”
or a
“fashion statement”
Sadly, many people’s minds have been bent by society and all of its lies towards the untrue idea of these definitions.
I get asked the question, “what is emo?” on a frequent basis. Most of the time by curious parents who have no idea what on earth it is.
What I tell them, is that “emo” is a genre of music, and if their mind has already been tainted by the world’s outlook of the word, i also tell them that it in no way describes someone who is depressed, cuts themself, or wears black. It usually takes them a while to get that through their head, if it even does.
Now, if you’re still confused, I’ve found a series of four videos that explain what “emo” is rather nicely. I recommend you checking them out, favoriting them, commenting them… whatever. It’s your choice.

This is a nice, sugar coated little concept of what you like to call “a genre of music”. In all honesty, i must firmly disagree with your statement.
How can you say emo “in no way describes someone who is depressed, cuts themself, or wears black”? In all reality, it DOES. Not because society “lies” about this, but because it is no longer just a genre of music. It IS a way of life, it IS a fashion statement, and it IS a state of mind.
When i first entered the scene, there were no swoops, no converse, no skin tight pants. There were no brightly colored hairstyles, no crews, no “straight edge” kids. There were normal looking kids, wearing normal looking clothes, with normal looking hair, coming to a local venue to enjoy “emotional hardcore” music.
Today’s “emo kids” are the ones who created this name for themselves, by turning the music scene into exactly what you’re denying emo to be… a fashion statement. You can’t blame society for observing a ridiculous parade of mismatched clothing, 13 year olds with piercings, and clown makeup. Kids go to these venues complaining about their parents and lack of excitement (i’ve heard it with my own ears) and sporting their self-cut hair, poor bleach jobs, and clothing they have cut up or layered to try and be “different” when they look just like every other “emo kid”.
I love emo music, along with every other genre of music, but it’s stupid and ignorant to deny the existance of the newly furnished definition of “emo”. There was once only one definition, and that is the genre of music. But thanks to millions of confused and rejected teenagers with daddy’s credit card or just too much spare time and energy, emo has taken on it’s own definition. That would be the fashion, the state of mind, and the way of life.
Way of life: Going to every show wether you like it or not just to participate in the scene
Fashion: A clash of clothing, colorful/black hair with lots of layers, converse/flats/vans, crazy makeup
State of Mind: Wether it applies or not, stereotypical emos whine, complain, bitch, and fight, giving THEMSELVES their OWN label.
that is all.
